Who Needs a Coach
Who Needs a Coach?
At one time or another, everyone can benefit from a coach.
Case in point – me. I was recently doing training as a part of my International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification. As a part of that work, I had the opportunity to receive peer coaching from my classmates. I used it as an opportunity to explore some real decisions I needed to make around my coaching practice.
The work I did with my peers was invaluable. They asked questions, made the observations and helped me identify and explore some of the significant decisions about my direction. I changed my opinion about some things, clarified my things on others, and made some pretty bold moves as a result of those sessions.
Could I have gotten there on my own? Perhaps, but it would have taken longer, and I know I would not have been as clear in my decision making. And for me, saying it out loud made it a real commitment I wanted to deliver on.
Some people work with a coach on an ongoing basis, but most people need coaches at pivotal times.
You might need a coach if:
You need to “think out loud” about an issue and your friend/peer network leaps into problem-solving.
Having an empathetic, but neutral coach can give you the space to explore tough decisions, clarify your positions and give voice to your goals.
Often your friends can’t separate their love for you from what you want and what is best for you. They jump to advice and problem solving and that can shortchange a thorough, honest exploration of where you are and where you’re headed. They may also tell you what you should do, but they may be telling you what’s right for them, not necessarily what’s right for you. Only you know that.
You are going through a job transition.
Whether it is a promotion, a lateral move or even a move down in the organization, it’s a lot. You have emotions, concerns and a lot to consider. And you may not have a network where you can safely explore your issues, opportunities and plans. A coach can help you work through these things and put your best foot forward.
You are feeling burned out.
80% of us are (Gallup). A coach can help you explore your overall wellbeing and how to move from suffering to thriving. Balance is a combination of our career, our social, our community, our financial and our physical wellbeing. When one is out of whack, it impacts the others. We’ve all had those times when the demands of our work have us neglecting a good diet and our exercise routine. When that goes on for too long, it impacts your wellbeing and you can feel burnout.
You need a change,
You are not feeling like your best self. You want more, but you aren’t sure where to begin. A coach can help. Your work may include assessments that give you insight into what feeds your and what drains you. That awareness can be significant in charting a new path.
